Tappit Hen Shaft, Tarnagulla, 2014

Tappit Hen Shaft, Tarnagulla, 2014

The Tappit Hen mine was located just north-west of the Tarnagulla Railway Station. This is the company's main shaft, and dates from the 1890s. The last remnants of the shaft collar timbers can be seen protruding over what was once a very substantial main shaft measuring 10 feet by 3 feet 6 inches, and 247 feet in depth. The mine was well-equipped with a 50 feet high poppet head, and high-powered steam engines drove the winding gear and heavy pumps which had to contend with a great deal of underground water owing to the mine's location. The mine finally closed in 1902 when the machinery was sold off, and in 1909 a fire destroyed the large machinery sheds.
