Rise and Shine or Stubbs' Reef, Tarnagulla, 2014

This reef is located about 30 metres west of the Tappit Hen Reef, and is close to Sandy Creek. The reef was a prolific gold producer in the late 1850s and 1860s. Interestingly, quartz blocks from the reef were used to construct the chimney for William Stubbs' nearby Rising Sun Hotel, and the chimney had to be demolished because of all the valuable gold which could still be seen in the quartz!

The shaft in this illustration is not one of the major shafts on the reef, but is significant in that the old fitted shaft timbers can still be seen around the collar after perhaps 150 years.
